Personal Data Protection is often (wrongly) seen as a pure compliance matter, and often as an area of relevance only in highly advanced digital economies.
The experience of an organization like the International Committee of the Red Cross – operating in armed conflicts and other situations of violence to bring protection and assistance to vulnerable affected communities for well over 150 years – brings out vividly how personal data protection is a matter that concerns everyone. It is a lot more than a pure compliance matter.
What does personal data protection represent for humanitarian organizations and most of all affected communities? Why is it so relevant to them, and why is it so particularly relevant today? What does this tell us about the value of personal data protection in our day to day experience?
